Weekend Meal Service
Making connections and establishing trusting relationships with people experiencing homelessness creates opportunities for service and empowerment. Celebrate Outreach! does this by serving about free, fresh, nutritious, hot meals to people experiencing hunger and homelessness in the downtown St. Petersburg area every weekend. Every Friday, dinner is served at the Unitarian Universalist Church of St. Petersburg, and every Saturday breakfast is served at Trinity Lutheran Church. About 200 people are served at each meal. Various groups, organizations, congregations, clubs and others volunteer each week to prepare hot nutritious meals and bring them to the church to be served by volunteers.
Through these participating congregations, Celebrate Outreach annually serves over 31,000 meals. The expense for this meal service is over $41,600, but most of the food and supplies are donated, and volunteers perform all of the cooking, serving, and cleaning. Dinners are also served on major holidays.
Food is a basic need, and these fellowship meals are a non-coercive way in which to participate in the lives of those we serve.
